With one big Hollywood superhero blockbuster opening this weekend, just three weeks after Ant-Man and a couple of smaller new releases peppered in, the summer movie season is alive and well.
Fantastic Four, the re imagining of Marvels first family, directed by Josh Trank and starring Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell and Michael B Jordan as the title characters opens this coming Friday. The film should easily take first, but its box office might be hindered considering the film has had a lot of bad press with rumors of behind the scenes drama and the fan backlash over the movie. Also the film has a review embargo of just 4 hours before the first showing, it doesn’t point to good signs and some early reviews that have slipped through the cracks haven’t been positive, with the film current sitting at a rotten 17% on rotten tomatoes with 6 reviews and with the previous Fantastic Four films fresh in our mind Fantastic Four has its back against the wall. But I hold out faith, the trailers have been great and I love the cast and the Marvel brand alone should carry it to first with more than likely a $45 million debut. I’m seeing Fantastic Four tomorrow, so watch for my review of it.
In second will be holdover Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation after enjoying the second best opening for a Mission Impossible movie the film should easily make $25 million in its second weekend.
In third I see Ant-Man, taking a bit of a hit from Fantastic Four but still managing to maintain its spot with an $8 million haul. In fourth will be Minions taking in a little less than Ant-Man with $7.5 million. And rounding out the top 5 will be Vacation making $7 million in its second weekend of release.
- Fantastic Four- $45 million.
- Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation- $25 million.
- Ant-Man- $8 million.
- Minions- $7.5 million.
- Vacation- $7 million.
