Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is back and it comes back with a bang.

The story seems to pick up a couple of months after the events of the season 2 finale with the terragin mist out and Inhumans starting to crop up more and more. They move that story forward by opening with an Inhuman called Joe being hunted by these black ops soldiers but that is until the Shield team save him. I got a feel for what the story was going to be for the season but I’m still not sure what is going to happen.

All of the powers and special effects were fantastic for a TV show. The episode features a lot of nice little references to the wider MCU but they aren’t directly mentioned and shoved down your throat which Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has had problems with in the past but they seem to have a handle on it now and all the references move the story forward.

Daisy seems to have a handle on her powers and is trying to help fellow Inhumans. They find an Inhuman named Joe who has a really emotional arc with him coming to the understanding that his life is forever changed and it will never be the same again. They handled this really well and it added weight to the story.

I really enjoyed the Rosaland character that they introduced. They start off by making her look like a bad guy but when Coulson and her come face to face they have a really awesome scene together which makes her turn out to not be the person Coulson thought she was. It was a really nice change. Speaking of Coulson I enjoyed everything with him and we got some unexpected emotion about him losing his hand.

May was nowhere to be seen also, Coulson said she never came back from vacation so I hope she reappears soon to explain why she did!

The rest of the crew are all featured but not much happens with them. Mack just sort of hangs around and Bobbi and Hunter are still figuring out their relationship. Hunter seems to be getting ready to look for Ward after what he did to Bobbi which I can’t wait to see and Bobbi is rehabing from the injuries she sustained from Ward. Lincoln appears in the episode when Daisy and Mack try to recruit him, they run into Lash who looked great and they have a really nice action sequence. Lash gets away so I look forward to seeing him again. Though I do feel it was weird for him to show up seeing as we didn’t know his motivation and it was out of nowhere.

Another character who really came out and surprised me was Fitz. Over the course of the 2 seasons he has had big changes and it all feels like it has led to this, his scenes are great and I can safely say he is a badass. He is like a cross between Han Solo and Indiana Jones. While on the topic of Fitz he is doing everything to try to save Simmons, who got sucked into the monolith. He has a really emotional scene with him up against the monolith crying to be sucked in to help Simmons it’s just fantastic.

The end credits stinger was Simmons in what looks to be another planet being chased by something. She looks to be in some sort of purgatory place inside the monolith and I can’t wait to find out what the go is there.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had a strong season premiere full of surprises.
