As a big fan of the Andy Weir novel, I had really high expectations for The Martian directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon. So could it meet my expectations? Absolutely!

The premise of the story is Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is left behind on Mars after a massive storm and is forced to survive. Drew Goddard, who wrote the screenplay adapted the book brilliantly. He kept everything that made the book special, the humor, the scientific jibber jabber, everything. I was so happy to see him keep with the spirit of the book. He adapted the story as well as he could, some things were left out, as to be expected with a book to film adaptation and for the most part he done it great. There were two plot points of the book that were toward the end of the book that weren’t in the film but I could see those being cut to keep the movie flowing which I’m fine with. All in all the story is fantastically told and I love the little touches they added to the movie.

The directing done by Ridley Scott is fantastic. Scott as of recent hasn’t had a good time in the directing chair with multiple critical and commercial failures but The Martian is not one of them. He directs everything brilliantly, from the visionary shots of Mars that are breathtaking to look at to the scenes on Earth. He mixs the drama and humour perfectly and he keeps the tone of the film consistent throughout. There is one particular scene with Watney that had me looking away from the screen from what I was seeing which again is a testament to his directing eye.

The acting in the film are all fantastic, Damon embodies Mark Watney and gives one of the best performances that he has given in recent memory. All of the Ares 3 crew are brilliantly acted and all the actors¬†on Earth¬†stand out to. It’s just a master class of acting from one of the best casts you will see this year.

The Martian is a triumph for all involved and one of the best films of the year. It features a fantastic story written by Drew Goddard, brilliant directing by a Ridley Scott who is at his finest and brilliantly acted cast led by Matt Damon!
