Netflix has dropped its second Marvel TV show Jessica Jones and its one of the best things Marvel has ever done.
This is a spoiler free review of all 13 episodes.
Jessica Jones delved deeper into this dark, gritty part of the Marvel universe that Daredevil explored earlier this year. In many ways this showed a more darker side to it then Daredevil did. At times it could be hard to believe that all this happens in a world where there is a superhero from another realm but they make you believe that they do.
The story was fantastic overall, there were a few parts of the story that didn’t hit such as Hogarts subplot but it doesn’t detract from the great main story. Every character is used in a smart way and a lot of characters went in a way that I didn’t expect.
Krysten Ritter bought Jessica Jones to life perfectly. She embodied everything Jessica Jones is and it was such a delight to see this character bought into the universe.
The villain of the season Kilgrave AKA The Purple Man was incredibly terrifying. His sheer power is terrifying when you see what he can do by saying a couple words. Kilgraves obsession with Jessica was creepy and sadistic and they make you really hate the man and root for him to die. They make the mind control work in this dark and gritty and world, which is a hard thing to do but they succeeded brilliantly. Although Kilgrave is this creep and disgusting human, finding out his back story and how he came to be kind of made you feel for him which is a testament to how great this show is. David Tennant was great as Kilgrave, him and Ritter had great chemistry and there scenes rank among the best. Kilgrave is one of the best villains in the MCU with Kingpin.
Luke Cage also shows up throughout this season, he quickly became one of my favourite characters on the show, when he is on screen is when the show is at its best. How Cages and Jones characters are connected was really interesting also. I can’t wait to see him in his own show.
The references to other things in the Marvel universe were minimal and when they were mentioned it was in a smart way. They even used what has happened in a previous film to create a sub plot in an episode which made you look at the incident in a different way and it worked so well.
They also plant some seeds on as to where the series might go in a second season which I hope we get to explore because its very intriguing. I will also disclaim there is a ton of sex scenes in this show, they over used it just a little.
Marvels Jessica Jones is another triumph in the dark parts of the MCU, with fantastic character development, an exciting story and a great villain. Marvel have created something special once again.
