In preparation for Star Wars: The Force Awakens I’m reviewing all of the Star Wars films and boy, The Phantom Menace is just as bad as you remember it.
The story is so boring, there is no excitment, no pay off, nothing. It’s completely uninteresting. It’s missing that magic that the original trilogy had. It was just all over the place and sloppy, no passion in it.
The acting is also not so great. Liam Neeson as Qui Gon Jinn is fine and Ewen Mcgregor as Obi Wan Kenobi is ok as well. But man they couldn’t have picked a better actor to portray Anakin. His so one note and gives no emotion at all.
The special effects are quite good though. Given that the film came out in the late 90’s most of the stuff still holds up quite well. The directing leaves something to be desired though, it’s just very boring and the film just feels stock.
There are some good scenes though. The pod racing scenes are great and still hold up to this day. The Darth Maul fight scene also is incredible. These two scenes are really the only saving grace of this film.
Now let’s get to Jar Jar, oh god, his soooooo horrible. He is just as bad as you remember him, a bumbling idiot who really helps make the film become a big joke. Although I did find him a little less annoying after hearing the darth Jar Jar theory which I recommend you check out.
Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace is just as bad as you remember and highlights everything that is bad about the prequels.
